Melissa Garay

Melissa Garay, a native of the Bay Area, discovered her passion for music during her formative years, finding inspiration in the harmonies of church and school choirs. Her journey into the local music scene marked the beginning of her exploration into a wide range of musical genres, from traditional jazz to R&B and diverse Latin styles.

Melissa's talent has led her to collaborate with renowned artists, including vocalist Tony Lindsay of Maze and Santana, esteemed jazz guitarist Randy Vincent, and bassist Chris Amberger, celebrated for his work with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. She has also shared the stage with percussionist Mingo Lewis, whose career includes performances with icons such as Al Di Meola and Chick Corea.

Her dedication to musical excellence is reflected in her academic achievements, which include several degrees and a Master's in Music with a concentration in jazz studies from San José State University. As part of her studies, Melissa embraced a global perspective, studying abroad and performing with the SJSU Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble in Havana, Cuba. This international experience enriched her artistry and deepened her appreciation for diverse musical traditions.

In addition to her dynamic academic career, Melissa is deeply committed to music education. As the former choir director at the prestigious Mexican Heritage Plaza, she nurtured the talents of emerging young musicians, instilling in them a profound appreciation for the arts. Her expertise as a vocal instructor, passion for music theory, and composition further enables her to guide aspiring artists in unlocking their creative potential and achieving new heights of artistic expression.

Currently, Melissa is a leading figure in the Bay Area music scene, serving as the lead vocalist for several distinguished ensembles, including the New Acoustic Collective, Colectivo, the Garay-Kaiser Duo, and Orquesta Liberación. Her recent performances with Conjunto Trujillo, paying homage to the late legendary Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla, have been met with resounding success, drawing sold-out audiences and setting the stage for an exciting lineup of performances in 2025.

Melissa is presently embarking on exciting new ventures, including the creation of her debut solo album, a project that reflects her diverse musical influences. She is also collaborating with American jazz guitarist, composer, author, and lecturer John Stowell, and acclaimed recording artists Jason Keiser, an innovative project that combines exceptional guitar artistry, sophisticated harmonies, and her captivating vocal performances, a celebration of jazz's depth and creativity.

With a career defined by passion, dedication, and versatility, Melissa Garay continues to captivate audiences and inspire the next generation of musicians. Her journey is a testament to the transformative power of music, and her unwavering commitment to artistic excellence.
